If a product is to be used on animals, say a dog shampoo, would it not have to then be tested on animals?  Granted, human trials could be done first...  How about a medication?  How do you know the appropriate dosage for this size dog or that?  What do you guys think?

How much discomfort is acceptable? What is your definition of cruelty? These are questions of ethics; is it appropriate for one being to suffer - no matter how slightly - so that other beings (including itself!) may benefit. Since we (collectively) cannot agree on a fixed moral standard, I would suggest that all we're left with is a relative standard - i.e. don't do any testing, or buy any product that's tested, beyond what you would be willing to do to yourself in pursuit of the same goal. Early doctors injected and infected themselves in pursuit of cures - I don't think this would justify them testing other humans (who have the ability to volunteer or not to be the subject of tests, based on a rational decision), but I do think it provides a certain moral defense if they do testing on organisms that are not able to object. Squirt shampoo in puppies' eyes to see if it stings? Sure - did it to myself first. I may not agree with you squirting shampoo in puppies' eyes, but at least I can't call you a hypocrite.

That was a satisfying exposition, but it didn't really answer your question. Yes, a shampoo for dogs would presumably be tested on dogs, or composed of substances that individually (and hopefully in combination) do not cause dogs distress. As for dosages, that's based on a) the history of the drug's use with dogs of that breed / size, and how your particular dog responds to the initial dosage.

My cousin's a vet, and she probably knows the answer to this. I'll ask next time I see her.

I always thought anything intended for use on animals was exempt from the usual taboo about testing on animals.
